What is Permanent Jewelry?

Permanent jewelry refers to a piece (necklace, bracelet, anklet or ring) that’s welded together instead of secured with a clasp. Just as there are many reasons people wear regular jewelry, there are different reasons they choose to wear permanent jewelry.

Choose a Chain

Chains can be used to dramatically suspend gems, stones, beads, and all manner of precious materials. Chains are also of strong aesthetic value in their own right and can be crucially instrumental in defining the visual feel of a bracelet or necklace. Link patterns are a critical determining factor in a chain, and the jewelry designer certainly isn’t at a shortage of styles to choose from: square, round, oval, diamond, rolo, satellite, figure-eight, heart-shaped, and snake chain link styles are all waiting to be experimented with in any combination.

Chain material should also be of consideration and a jewelry studio’s choice of materials makes a huge difference in how long its jewelry will last. Those choices also impact whether the jewelry can even be worn by people with sensitive skin or metal allergies.

  • Solid 14k Gold: Solid Gold jewelry is made entirely of gold - inside and out! There are various Karats of gold which is the percentage of 24k gold in the jewelry piece. It is the most expensive, but most durable.
  • 14k Gold Fill: A piece of jewelry that is gold filled consists of 5% solid gold that is mechanically bonded to the base metal (bronze/brass). This mean that gold fill jewelry has up to 100 times more gold than gold plated jewelry. Gold fill is a quality option that wont break the bank, but still offers a decent lifetime for the piece. It is more durable than plated jewelry and will not tarnish or chip. To make Gold Filled jewelry, extreme pressure and heat are used to mechanically bond a thick layer of Gold to the base metal and regulations require the use of at least 10k Gold in making Gold Filled jewelry.
  • Sterling Silver: Made of 92.5% Silver and 7.5% other base metals. Why? Pure Silver is too soft to be durable for jewelry crafting, so mixing it with other metals makes it harder. Sterling Silver is often marked with a “925” imprint indicating that it meets regulations. Sterling Silver contains much more actual Silver, and is far more durable and hypoallergenic than Silver Plated. While Sterling Silver will eventually oxidize and tarnish, it can easily be polished (with a cleaning cloth) back to its original state.
